Error: Internal error: java.lang.NullPointerException See log files for details” attempting to check for new firmware on IGEL UMS 6.02.110

Has anyone come across this when attempting to check for new firmware versions (UMS 6.02.110)?

I have the same issue but no solution so far.

@member did the support already provide some ideas (assuming you opened a ticket?

@member No I haven’t open a ticket yet. How about you?

I‘m working for Igel but I‘m mostly on the road and I can‘t reproduce it unfortunately. So I didn‘t tbh. 😅

We have the same problem, seems after adding IGEL OS 11 to the UMS, logging says: Caused by: java.text.ParseException: Hour values must be between 0 and 23

Hello, so far it is a known issue. Regarding to our 3rd-level-support a re-installation/update/downgrade to UMS 6.03.130 should be a workaround to that issue.

Thanks for sharing that, @member let‘s see what you can find out internally regarding the fix itself. 👍✊

I keep everyone in here updated!

@member updating to 6.03.130 is a known fix?

@member someone will be replying to your case as well, but this has was resolved on the IGEL firmware hosts. Due to server-side caching it could take up to a couple weeks to correct itself in your UMS.

We are waiting for development to provide a way to clear the cache manually.

Interesting….. If it is a cache, why not nuke the cache…

Ahh! Gotcha

@member Is this referring to the rmcache found at : rmguiservertemprmcache ?

I’m experiencing all these same symptoms on 6.02.100 after simply closing out of UMS console and it now fails to launch ever since. Server has been rebooted and I also noticed there is no “IGELRMGUIServer” service even listed to cycle…

That sounds like something completely different @member, is it the same exact error message?

ALso, are you using the console on the server, or connecting with a remote install?

Local console on server

@member Maybe I need to start a new thread, but below is latest that gets written to RMClient.exe.txt when trying to launch:

2020-03-11T12:52:23 [Info] “JavaVM loaded successfully. Version: 1.8”

2020-03-11T12:52:26 [Critical] “Cannot find mainclass de/igel/rm/rmconsole/RMClient”

Can you try installing the console on a remote device and connecting back? Something may have happened to the install and I want to see if it is just the console

In the igel-ums-console log I can see the NullPointerException in the Java stacktrace:

2020-03-02 12:57:39,754 ERROR [AWT-EventQueue-0] AbstractApplicationAction:

java.lang.NullPointerException

Sure will

Safe to use 6.04.100 on the remote server?

Yea, the java.lang.NulPointerException can mean a lot of things

You won’t be doing a remote server, just the console

@member I think the issue with that will be the fact that there is no webserver running. Currently no processes listening on 8443.

Did you backup everything before upgrading?

That’s the thing… No upgrades have been performed. I literally Exited out of UMS console on the same server hosting UMS server just yesterday and ever since, its hosed

Can you create a backup using the UMS Administor console?

Tried, but it also fails to launch with same “Cannot find mainclass de/igel/rm/rmconsole/RMClient” error

Is that the console or the admin? There should be two different options

@member

2020-03-10T13:09:42 [Info] “JavaVM loaded successfully. Version: 1.8”

2020-03-10T13:09:42 [Critical] “Cannot find mainclass de/igel/rm/admin/RMAdmin”

@member Disregard the above… Found out client had tried to perform upgrade of UMS while I had instance open at the same time. It appears changes failed to rollback after that process had started and as result, corrupted current UMS suite.

I was able to retrieve most recent backup and work from that to begin migration. How do I register new UMS license ID when I have no backup to restore the previous from?

I thought you said you did get the most recent backup?

Correct, I did get it after speaking with the client to learn they at least remembered to take one prior to starting upgrade.. Was not aware we had that to work with initially.

I’ve stood up new suite on new server where we are migrating to anyway, and restored from that backup but it only included DB, so now I need to either get new UMS license ID registered in ILP or somehow still restore the old, but the old suite is still trashed so I can’t get into rmadmin to take backup

If you didn’t get the UMS License ID backed up, you will need to get the new one from UMS and upload it to the license portal, just be warned migrating devices will not be simple

Thanks, I saw that KB as well. Question about this part here, though:

A UMS Licensing ID can be reused if the UMS database is restored from a backup. The UMS Licensing ID does not change if any parameters of the UMS installation are changed, for instance, the host name / IP address. Thus, it can be transferred to any other server. Also, multiple UMS installations can share one UMS Licensing ID, which allows for sharing Product Packs between them.

That would indicate simply having the .pbak of the former database is all that is needed to reuse the existing UMS License ID?

The client did not take a .ksbak prior to breaking things..

If they didn’t select licenses when creating a backup then you will have to migrate. This means registering the new UMS server, then factory resetting all the devices and bringing them into the new instance

you should be able to register the new license ID following the KB below. Then move the licenses to the new server, and start the process of migrating devices
