CUPS printer issues with IGEL OS

I have CUPS printer issues with IGEL OS 11.03.x and VMware Horizon. The local printer does not show up inside the virtual desktop. I am fairly sure about that i didn’t have that issue with older IGEL OS 11 versions. Using Windows 10 + Horizon Client + locally installed printer = working just fine… i can see the local printer inside the VDI, so it isnt a Horizon issue.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

edit: removed command prompt screenshot from initial post. it contained an unrelated error message.

Hello. By default the Horizon client should use ThinPrint to mapp printers. Can you confirm that is enabled on the image and the IGEL device?

Update:

After a lengthy troubleshooting session, i can now confirm that:

a. When “Workspace ONE mode” is required (see screenshot)

b. And using the built-in firefox browser to authenticate into Workspace ONE

c. Then clicking the VDI entitlement in the Workspace ONE landing page

d. Which launches the Horizon Client to then TrueSSO into the virtual desktop

e. … Breaks virtual printing! The printer is not visible inside the virtual desktop.

This is NOT broken for Windows or macOS using the exact same method of getting into the VDI.

If i set “Delegation of authentication” to Allowed (instead of Required) and then configure IGEL OS to not start a browser, but instead start the Horizon Client with a configured server (basically using radius), then the CUPS TCP/IP printer shows up inside the VDI just fine.

I am not sure where the issue lies exactly. Perhaps having no Horizon server defined and instead launching Horizon Client via the Firefox browser is the culprit?

IGEL OS 11.03.580 –> Horizon Client –> Radius –> VDI Desktop:

works like a charm

IGEL OS 11.03.580 –> FireFox Client –> Workspace ONE –> Click VDI icon –> TrueSSO –>VDI Desktop:

(same thin client)

does NOT work like a charm

To rule out if this problem is IGEL OS related or Horizon Linux Client related, I have installed an Ubuntu endpoint today with Firefox plus the Horizon Client and proceeded to install a CUPS printer inside Ubuntu. After logging on with FireFox to Workspace ONE Access –> True SSO –> VDI Desktop … i could see the CUPS printer installed and available inside the virtual desktop.

So something in IGEL OS11 does not want to play ball when FireFox launches the Horizon Client. No CUPS printer is available. Only when directly authenticating with the Horizon Client in IGEL OS11, will it show a CUPS printer.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

Are you using HTML to access the desktop?

No, HTML is disabled completely, we only allow Horizon Desktop Client connections.

The problems seems to be that the webstart handler in firefox does not set the environment variable needed for thinprint to work, @member.

This can be mitigated by setting the env var globally: In the tcsetup/UMS go to System>Firmware Customization>Environment Variables>Predefined.

There set the variable name

_TPCLIENTADDR_ with a value _/config/thinprint/.thnuclnt/svc_

(I case you want to use Skype f. Business, there’d be another variable you have to set)

That did it! Thanks a lot. Do you have a list of other variables i can (choose to) add?
