Hi @member that’s a great question. I don’t have any resources for that, maybe someone else here does. What are you trying to achieve? Have you considered simply keeping the same server and upgrading the UMS?

@member did you setup a completely new server on version 6?

I would:

Setup Automatic Registration, pointing to the new server:

kb.igel.com/endpointmgmt-5.09/en/registering-thin-clients-automatically-22458321.html

incl. DHCP 224 and / or DNS Alias

Export all profiles from old server, import them on new server:

kb.igel.com/endpointmgmt-6.01/en/exporting-and-importing-profiles-22457084.html

Copy files from C:ProgramfilesIgelRemoteManagerRmguiserverwebappsums_filetransfer that you still need to your new server (please don’t copy everything, they are folder like web-inf that shouldn’t get copied)

Recreate Folder and Profile Assignments

Check Profiles if there is a old reference to old server.

Recreate Default Directory Rules in accordance:

kb.igel.com/endpointmgmt-6.03/en/default-directory-rules-22462988.html

Reboot Endpoints.

Hi, the customers network is a jungle where everything is installed somwhere and no one knows who why or where. No documentation either 🙂 All i want to archive is some order. The UMS does not need to be installed on a server that is already working hard with its load (several SQL big databases). So i st up a tiny vm an installed the UMS there. Now i want to get everything working there so i can send the UMS5 to its grave..

Will try what

Keep my fingers crossed! It might need to remove the certificate if it fails:

kb.igel.com/endpointmgmt-6.03/en/removing-a-certificate-22462841.html

Jep this was the first thing I was thinking about: will the endpoints really auto connect to the new ums after the reboot? I think as long as the old ums cert is stored at the endpoints, they will not connect to another ums server.

Do the clients retain their current profiles if they auto connect to the new UMS or do i need to reconfigure them? What i absolutely do not want is that the customer can’t work…. So will there or won’t there be an interruption of the workflow?

BTW is it possible to just upgrade the old UMS from 5.0.8.110 (Build 35192) to the new 6.03 Version? Would that make the transfer easier?

Does one need to be a professor to get this working …. I’m not able to perform a database backup because a) in the UMS i can’t find where im supposed to go. The directions are vauge at best and b) the trusty cmd backup program runs but does zilch in creating an actual file? It says it does but if i go and look for the file there is nothing? So should i blast 6 over 5 and hope for the best? (Don’t take this to serious)

Hi @member can you DM me your details? I’d be happy to chat about this with you in detail.

Answers to some of your questions:

> Do the clients retain their current profiles if they auto connect to the new UMS or do i need to reconfigure them?

If the new UMS does not have the same settings for this thin-client, the thin-client will lose the current settings (unless they are applied for next reboot). So you would need to reconfigure them. And if the new config is not ready in the new UMS/has not been applied, there could be disruption for the end-users.

> is it possible to just upgrade the old UMS from 5.0.8.110 (Build 35192) to the new 6.03 Version?

It’s possible but I would upgrade to 6.01 first. Also, always make a backup before any upgrades 🙂

> I’m not able to perform a database backup because a) in the UMS i can’t find where im supposed to go. The directions are vauge at best

If you are on UMS 5.05+, you can use the UMS Administrator program to perform a manual UMS backup. This program is not the same as the UMS Console, you should be able to find it in Windows in the Start Menu under [IGEL] Universal Management Suite. Once it’s open, go to the Backups tab, click Create and select all the options for backing up.

> So should i blast 6 over 5 and hope for the best?

You could, but I would check the following:

• the UMS version is 5.08+

• you have made a backup of the UMS

• you have the setup file for your current UMS in case you need to downgrade (please note that older versions of the UMS are not all available to download still…)

Thank you for the answers:) My UMS ist on 5.0.8+ so i’ll download 6.0.1 then ill try the update

No problem BR0KK, let us know how everything goes

The backup worked Yuhu 😉 I downloaded the older version and will do an upgrade soon. This update will not disconnect all my clients in any way? I do have a lot of older Versions of IGEL OS (5) connected to this UMS. I’ll assume they won’t get autoupdated with UMS Version 6

Great!! No, a simple upgrade will not affect the thin clients in anyway. The only time that disruption would occur is if new settings were sent to the thin clients after a modification

Oh wait… @member do not upgrade to UMS6 yet! 🚩🚩🚩

If your v5 thin clients are not running the latest FW (5.13.110) they won’t connect to UMS 6+ due to an incompatility with TLS

Ok i’ll check for that

But you did say you are running 5.08 already so if that works then you should be OK. But still check if you have any old FW versions like v5 or v4 (v4 definitely won’t work)

Downloading the appropriate updates for the older igels right now. Some of them run on 5.10.240.01 but nothing lower than that. If i do the upgrade to 5.13.110 the IGEL need to reboot but does it loose its configuration ?

> No, a simple upgrade will not affect the thin clients in anyway.

To clarify: there will be no disruption to thin-clients caused by any UMS upgrade. However, older devices that are incompatible with a new UMS versions will no longer receive settings or updates from the UMS

> If i do the upgrade to 5.13.110 the IGEL needt to reboot but does it loose its configuration ?

No, the firmware update does not affect settings. However, if you were upgrading from v5 to v10 that would erase the settings as it’s a completely different OS.

Yeah i’ll cross that bridge after i fixed this mess 🙂 also i assume i do need to by a license to be able t go to OS 10 or 11 (assuming the IGEL Hardware isn’t to old )

So many questions! 😄

> also i assume i do need to by a license to be able t go to OS 10

Not if you are using IGEL hardware. IGEL thin-clients running v5 can upgrade to v10 without requiring a new license (they need to be compatible with OS 10 though)

> or 11 (assuming the IGEL Hardware isn’t to old )

You will need to purchase an OS11 license to migrate to OS11 from OS10. However, not all devices are compatible.

Especially:

• UD3-LX 30/31/40/41/42

• UD5-LX 40
